The influential weekly The Economist published in the column labeled Schumpeter (March 10, www.economist.com/node/18330445 ), A critique of Porter and Kramer's article I commented in a previous article on my blog of January 26 ( If it is not broke do not fix it , www.cumpetere.blogspot.com/2011/01 / if-not-that-broke-no-it-fix-porter-y.html ).
For those without access to the magazine or can not read English, I will discuss the column, referring to my article.
is really unusual for The Economist worry to criticize a particular item, which shows the importance given to both the issue as to this article. usually do reviews, but not critical.
Column fierce critiques Porter's article on lines similar to mine, but goes further and takes the opportunity to hit the CSR.
start with the title, sarcastic, in the style of the magazine, but harder than normal. I could translated as
Come Mr. Porter! The new big idea of \u200b\u200bthe greatest living guru of business seems a bit raw.
Wasted sarcasm to say that the great guru brings an idea that is no big deal and over is not made. also adds with premeditation Porter has not had the equivalent of a great success for 20 years. l E Kramer and co-author name is mentioned, suggesting that it is an argument personnel against Porter.
In like manner in our article we said that: Only authors such as Porter and Kramer can afford to publish a paper with a caption ... ... so exaggerated (As reinvent capitalism and unleash a wave of innovation and growth) ... ... .... But it is what it says it is nor add much. ... The problem is to make us believe that there is a revolutionary proposal.
After column adds The endorsement of Mr. Porter's brand depends heavily on the reception you have your last great idea .
agree with The Economist that Porter wants to maintain the validity of their "brand" publishing supposedly great ideas as stated in the title. We said that four-year Each item is a conceptual extrapolation of the above. You have to invent something new to publish.
The Economist notes that: Some of the examples provided are known Porter: The ecomagination, GE, and packaging reduction Walmart something that also commented.
But the coincidence is more fundamental criticism that it adds nothing about how to implement the ideas. We said (bold added):
But the problem is not lack of knowledge of what to do, the problem is the lack of implementation of ideas. Implementation not worried, nor mention it. conceptual only worry. I would say the easy part. How to ensure more effective implementation does not propose anything.
The Economist criticized for naive
His arguments have some common pitfalls: persistently underestimated the balance that companies have to do repeatedly, even in enterprises that have great potential for social good.
and puts the picture enhancement. society sitting on planet earth trying to enchant with their music to the red snake of money and ambition, each on a scale which supposedly balance both interests.
But columnist criticizes not only Porter but the whole CSR movement. They return to the skepticism of the special supplement of the magazine in 2005 when he says that Porter is right when he says that " CSR, the preferred response of the Boards of Directors of this crisis of legitimacy is a label expires --- ... ... ... ... few people outside the public relations industry can hear those mantras of "win-win" or "win by doing good" without making faces.
But surely the solution is not to change the label as some have suggested!
recognizes, however, that large companies base their leaders if strategies in responsible practices, citing Pepsico, Nestle, Prudential (UK) and Petrobras. But cited as an exception rather than the rule. In counterpart quotes former Treasury Secretary and former Harvard President Larry Summers to hear these ideas heard someone exclaim And you seriously believe in this @ # $! x!?
can always find a quotation that supports our ideas.
And we thought that such skepticism was already passed.
Fortunately we have the consolation that the interest in the topic is increasing. We have to fight for the interest is toward the positive side.
