Star In The Middle Of The Palm

Not everything that can be counted counts, not everything that counts can be counted

This event, commonly attributed to Einstein, as reflected very graphic issues facing responsible practices within companies, especially when those who insist on measurable benefits in the short term, give preference to the alternative quoted, anonymously, that " can only manage what you can measure . " According to these, if we can not measure, we can not manage and then it is best to do nothing that is not measurable.

body perishes we find a dilemma. On the one hand the high priority given in the management of the measurable business to the tangible, and secondly the difficulty many responsible practices to demonstrate measurable benefits. Unfortunately at the cost not So the problem there are tangible in the short term. But the benefits are often long term and often intangible. Not to mention the intangible costs avoided by making good forecasts. There is thus great pressure on those who promote responsible practices can be measured. Do not just use a lot of pretty words and promises. The argument that must be done because it is right is not sustainable.

To convince the skeptics and to initiate or continue programs of corporate responsibility often have to appeal to the business case ( business case) that these practices have benefits, whether in the form of improvements in income, reductions or reduced costs risk. For many advocates of these practices would suffice to say that the benefits are intangible and long term, but the skeptics want to see tangible and in the short term. Both are right. Unfortunately many times those who control the decisions are in favor of the latest version, any costs are incurred if and only if concurrent yield measurable benefits, especially if their bonuses are tied to profits in the short term. Some purists to take the book version, which requires that the results of the practices are reflected in the financial statements, and not just the cost. For them, the benefits can not be measured does not count.

To promote responsible practices have to extend the measurable field and look for patterns of quantification, but often do not amount to express in monetary terms. And much of the problem is that the measure is also costly, but the investment in measurement can be profitable if they can demonstrate benefits.

And the recent crisis has made it even more necessary. The crisis clearly see the costs of responsible practices and put them to compete, within budget, with other investments and expenses of more tangible benefits.

Many times, to justify, say some employee benefits, such as combining work and family (Eg to work from home some days), or putting a cafe in the workplace, increase labor productivity. But they show only what we say, maybe with an example of circumstantial. This may be enough for us to approve a pilot program, but not to a permanent program. For this we will demonstrate increased productivity. So it is important that these pilot schemes are accompanied by information and data collection to enable us to measure the impact not only how they used or how much it cost.

This is a very common error in CSR: ignore the impact measurement. When you want to measure it that the program had not incorporated the measurement system and any special study ex post is very expensive and fail to demonstrate the business case. Have been developed, especially in recent times, methods for the quantification of what are considered intangible, although not specifically developed for corporate responsibility issues, can be used. This can be quantified via surveys, special studies in pilot cases, compared with other companies, among other methodologies.

Obviously there are many responsible practices with tangible benefits and that its measurement is relatively simple, such as savings resource consumption (water, electricity, packaging, recycling, etc..), which do not require special technology.

But I think the wisdom of Einstein is imposed. There are many things that can be measured, but do not have and others have, but unfortunately can not be measured. But we must make the effort.

Star Wars The Clone Wars Henta

How the company invests in CSR?

Can you answer a question like this?

Some think so. In the book: "The English multinational and 'business responsibility' in Latin America", published by Peace with Dignity and the Observatory Multinational in Latin America, OMA, in 2009, says, on page 184 "... on average have only English transnational social responsibility for 1.2% of its profits" And this is expressed in the context of alleged this investment is made to mask the deteriorating quality of employment and violations of fundamental rights. When I first read gave no importance, I assumed that everyone who read it would realize that there was a contradiction in the statement can not be quantified or investment or spending on CSR, properly understood. This quote was widely reproduced by the media, including recently, but with the added difficulty of changing the word "intended" to "invest". It's a quote sexy. But I think it is time to clarify the confusion. Unfortunately

have the bad habit of repeating without analyzing what lies behind the "news." There is nothing more attractive to repeat positions a company in a ranking, to say that this or that won this award, this or that was expelled from the index. There is nothing more attractive than a good gossip, I said in the article "In that resemble the CSR Rankings and gossip about infidelity? (May 2009 www.cumpetere.blogspot.com).

If you look a little information accompanying statement will realize that what companies report is the "spending on social action, or what companies have invested or spent on activities of philanthropy and community support. It's what companies can bring in money. Is this CSR? Is it just part of CSR? Can companies account for their investments in CSR?

do not mean to defend corporations that are part of that statistic, but there is no way to know their investments in CSR do not know how big or little, do not know the authors and I believe that neither neither do companies themselves. How much would a reasonable figure "investment CSR? I have no idea. I know what they are responsible and irresponsible practice, and that companies should have many of the first and few or none of the latter.

I apologize to those who already know, because I just have to repeat what you hear in any meeting dealing with CSR, the more fundamental concept: CSR is a way of managing, the responsibility must permeate all the actions of the company, part of everyday activities, not just some special activities. Some activities have measurable costs and benefits that can be posted and therefore reporting in dollars, euros or the currency that is. Some have measurable costs, such as action social impacts or benefits but the company is not measurable. But the vast majority of responsible actions have costs and benefits are not measurable, or at least not with current accounting systems.

When through training or a better work environment increases the value of human capital, accounting not collect it. Human capital is the Balance Sheet. Maybe they counted the cost of training, but the benefits are not counted. Maybe it increases productivity and someday the profit and loss is whole, but there will be no attribution of benefit expenditure. Companies "accounted for the costs of the days of volunteering as an investment CSR? Maybe some do, but most are business expenses, not investment. Is it a countable cost to have independent directors? And have a code of ethics? Perhaps the functioning of the Ethics Committee itself is countable, but not the effect that its operation is the responsibility of the company.

Separate accounting "between the protection of the environment is being done to comply with the law and that is going further? What about the payment of "business facilitation" companies are making investments or expenses attributable to the anti-CSR?

Some will say that a good company should measure responsible practices. Totally agree, measure and report the results of their responsible practices. From there to be able to say how much it cost or how much was spent is a long way. We expect companies to report their carbon emissions, the environmental impact of waste, recycling of paper or ethnic and gender diversity. But do not confuse CSR indicators of investment and expenditure accounts in CSR.

This is not to say that there is to be measured. On the contrary, we must make every possible effort. If you measure is easier to promote and manage, but "Not everything that can be measured account, and not everything that counts can be measured" is the title the next article. But to pretend that everything is measurable or measurable only must do is myopic.

Can you answer the question: How much companies invest in CSR? There is an inherent contradiction in the question. Or not talking about investment (but some costs) or are not talking about CSR

What Is The Highest Triglyceride Level

What can we learn from the social irresponsibility of some microfinance?

Why worry now this? For two reasons. The first is that the recent crisis that micro finance system in a state of India can spread to the rest of the world and especially Latin America. When you see your neighbor's beard burn, put yours to soak. And the other is because this crisis teaches us lessons for accountability office of financial institutions in general and businesses in particular.

The crisis in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India is emerging as a result of some customers could not pay the high rates of interest on loans which led many families to ruin and disgrace and, in some cases, suicide. This situation was unfortunately exacerbated by opportunistic politicians who suggested not paying the loans until they fix the situation. By interrupting the flow to the microfinance has closed the renewal of credit, business critical link, and opened a vicious circle virulent. Much of the high interest rates due to high transaction costs in very small loans with direct supervision intensity. However, some of these high rates is due to the quasi-monopoly power of some financial. The fact that one of them was the capital market with a share issue that made millionaires of some of its shareholders, damaged the public image of these institutions. An issue of corporate responsibility.

there was a case in Latin America, which fortunately did not reach higher. Apart from isolated protests by some experts in the field, there was no reaction of customers or politicians. Was the case of microfinance, with a large market position Urban was a monopoly, charging interest rates in excess of 100 percent, even with minimal delinquency, with more than 600,000 customers. Its return on equity exceeded 50 percent, when traditional banks did not exceed 10 percent. The owners decided to go to the Stock Exchange, to raise capital and expand its coverage, but to sell 30 percent of their shares converted into cash and accounting earnings. The issuance was an over-subscription of 12 times. The original contributions of capital of U.S. $ 6 million had become $ 125 million in book value through profit accounting, and became U.S. $ 1,500 million through the assessment in the bag. The shareholders had a yield of 100% compounded annually during each of the seven years of the existence of financial. All thanks to higher interest rates to 100 by the way the poor pay. Who paid for these extraordinary profits for shareholders?

Legal "? YES, Ethics? NO. Not that I have nothing wrong with making money legally, but there are ways and ways. The broadcast was aimed at capturing the high value of the microfinance market, under the expectation of gains, based on high interest rates. But what they charged was not illegal and unregulated. It has always been argued, correctly, that control of interest rates would deprive severely credit. But what about social responsibility where it is? Apparently it was enough for developers to engage in microcredit, it fulfilled its work to society. This was a great missed opportunity to create, with some of the perks, a Foundation for financial education of microentrepreneurs. And obviously voluntarily reduce interest rates.

addition to the traditional responsibilities of any company, what are the specific responsibilities to microfinance? In fact the vast majority are common with any financial institution only more intense, more social, more cohesive. These must be tailored to the market they cover, which is usually very competitive and very few customers with financial expertise. Only enumerate these special responsibilities not to extend:

• Provide funding that the customer needs and the customer only needs

• As the client does not usually know what you need, you have to give financial education in the demand resources and responsible use.

• And the most important responsibility, reduce borrowing costs through the efficiency of financial intermediation by:

  • Collection Low cost : financial risk control and portfolio mix of funding, good governance, accountability (ethics and transparency), compliance reporting objectives (client monitoring and aggregation)
  • intermediation margins Netherlands: Efficiency management, technology applications, selection and customer support, management of liquidity.
  • effective placement: for maximum recovery

But MFIs have concerned the impact of transaction costs have on their clients or simply passed on these higher costs? MFIs will say that it is problem competitive market in which they operate. But the market is not competitive, with all that you mean. The poor client (in the broad sense of the word) has no knowledge of finance, is not sophisticated enough to go from financial financial to see who gives better conditions. Do you know how to distinguish which are the best conditions? And if he does find out, do not worry, financials will take care of so they do not complicate it.

The fact provide a service that supposedly helps improve the quality of life of the population, that supposedly helps reduce poverty (in fact not yet proven) not allowed to ignore the responsibility of your product / service and the price at which the product sells

The competitive market for microfinance is still a fallacy in most developing countries. Its regulation is relatively weak, and when there is a regulation more closely linked to the stability of the system to protect the consumer.

But it also leaves us important lessons for financial and nonfinancial companies. Many of the problems of MFIs are due to irresponsibility on the product / service they sell and the price at which they sell. In business in general, those who care about social responsibility, care of the traditional typology of tasks: environment, good governance, human resources policies, community support, etc..

But the responsibility for the product and its price does not receive much attention. In the case of obviously harmful products, but for which there is great demand (snuff, alcohol, etc..), The onus on governments to regulate their production and consumption, and largely the same companies, who have to care the goose that lays the golden eggs and not lose the business. But there are many products whose consumption is left to the "regulation" of the consumer, often ignorant of the subject. Bracelets have seen miraculous creams that reverse aging, slimming shoes and reduce cellulite pills and lift it all at full power. Product liability is a relatively ignored by the guards of CSR.

And not to mention price. Prices are also supposedly "regulated" by competitive markets. Under the assumption that there are many manufacturers that produce similar products, not necessary that the company implements its responsibility to be fair prices. The market does. But this depends on an assumption in the functioning of competitive markets, which as in the case of microcredit, is rarely respected. And is the availability of information and the consumer's ability to act on it.

And we are not proposing price controls, we are proposing a better functioning of markets where they exist, via more and better consumer information and education

microfinance This case illustrates the responsibility that companies should have two areas that CSR watchers often assume that others ignore or cover them: the responsibility of the product and its price. In these respects we are a little late.

What are the indices of sustainability?

begin asking the reader a little patience as this article is a little longer than usual to be a less familiar topic.

This article aims to contribute to a better understanding of what are and what the rates are not sustainable, what are they and what will not work. This is important to understand the criticisms made of them, so that the reader knows how to use and can draw your conclusions in an informed manner.

To mark the event named BP and Shell least, has recently revived the issue of sustainability indices. The first case refers to criticism of the indices include companies such as BP irresponsible. The second to Shell decided to exclude the Dow Jones Sustainability Index of the indicators to determine some of the bonuses of their executives, to be excluded from the index.

This has given rise to great critical indices especially the lack of transparency about the criteria used for inclusion and exclusion of companies (Jose Angel Moreno Izquierdo wrote a lengthy article, Qualifiers "disqualified? on these critical Responsible Journal on October 28, 2010 (www . diarioresponsable.com). There have also been critical of apparent inconsistencies between rates when companies include and exclude.

To understand all this criticism need to know more about the different indices. Why indexes are created What are the criteria for inclusion of companies what are their problems? Why what are they and how are they used? Why do companies want to be members?

mid-2009 had more than 50 levels of sustainability, most of them created in the last three years, some new are general indices, multisectoral and multinational companies, but most are specialized in clean energy and climate change some are specialized in countries. In September 2010 the stock of Mexico and Istanbul announced the creation of its indexes. In Latin America was created in 2005, the Sao Paulo Stock Exchange (ISE BM & FBovespa). In Spain was created in 2009 the FTSE4Good IBEX, which belongs to the family of indices FTSE4Good, which also consisted of many other stock exchanges in developed countries.

This article attempts to put these criticisms into context and clarify some misunderstandings that have arisen with regard to indexes. Obviously not a treatise on sustainability indexes. I will comment on Dow Jones Sustainability Index (originated by the company then owns the Wall Street Journal, created in 1999) and the FTSE4Good (Financial Times, established in 2001) are the largest and most popular, and the Stock Market Sao Paulo, being the first in Latin America (and second in developing countries). The Dow Jones covers 318 companies, the FTSE4Good not revealed and the Stock Market Sao Paulo only 34 companies. The first two are family and have rates by country and region subscripts.

Let's start by answering why they create these indexes. Are created primarily to meet the needs of the socially responsible investment industry, ISR, which seeks to invest in securities of companies that according to some criterion , qualify as responsible. Investors can buy shares directly (if you know what) or buy shares in investment funds created to reproduce partially or totally the index.

Once investors create portfolios or funds based on criteria of sustainability need evaluate their performance, and used these indexes as benchmark for reference. The sale of these services is where the income comes from rates of Dow Jones and FTSE4Good (this index gives its revenue from licensing UNICEF.) They also prepare indexes of the client. For example, the Dow Jones has sold more than 70 licenses for use. The Stock Exchange of Sao Paulo derives its revenue by charging for applications, as not yet being used as a benchmark. These indexes also have costs that must be covered and, in some cases, provide benefits. Therefore, the methodology in both cases is copyrighted reserved. The product indexes is relatively easy to copy, but expensive to reproduce, and hence the confidence with which they are managed.

is very important to stress that the rating is done "according to a criterion" because this is where they leave a lot of confusion. We have mentioned many times that there is no fully responsible company. The companies have some or many responsible practices (see my recent article "The tip of the iceberg of CSR " http://www.cumpetere.blogspot.com/ ). For this reason, the indexes must decide what criteria and methodology will be used to determine the inclusion of companies.

The Dow Jones index is a kind of "best in class", so it includes companies that are considered more responsible in their "class", ie, within your industry or subsector. Some companies might consider very responsible but not so as the leader and therefore may not be, or exit at any given time if it gets any better. Dow Jones publishes The components, inputs and outputs of the index and the general methodology for calculating the index. The FTSE4Good is an index. Only public companies entering and leaving, and neither its composition nor its methodology in the public domain. What can find are the criteria for inclusion and exclusion that are public and other details about the methodology, as the areas of risk and compliance requirements by risk and level of market capitalization .

The Stock Exchange of Sao Paulo has its own methodology. The process of selection of companies is based on a survey of nearly 200 questions, inviting companies that exceed a minimum of stock market liquidity. The responses from companies that agree to participate are encrypted, eliminating the worst, and it becomes a statistical analysis to determine the best that are submitted for final decision making Advisory Council.

Can these indexes include companies with irresponsible practices? Sure . And here's the first confusion. Firstly, because the primary source of information to companies. In some cases analysts pose questions to the companies or physical information is asked back, but overall the information is controlled by companies. Secondly the selection process itself can not be exhaustive.

In the case of the Dow Jones Sustainability Index are companies that produce products that many would describe as irresponsible, but in your industry are the most responsible and best practices have. In the index there are producers of snuff and spirits, that maybe used with raw material from sustainable agriculture by paying fair prices, excellent human resources management, etc. Companies included are those rated as more responsible in their subsector (also prepared subscripts to the measure, without snuff, weapons or alcohol products). In the case of FTSE4Good, companies may also be irresponsible because it does not measure all of their practices. Should the indexes include companies with products irresponsible? I think not. Is oil a responsible product?

Inclusion criteria are different for each index. Some indexes are updated every six months, other annual update, hence they do not react immediately to the detection of some irresponsibility. This may also explain why a company can enter and exit a rate other than using different criteria for inclusion.

Much of the criticism is based on a mistaken assumption that membership in the indexes, it means that companies are fully accountable. The user of the index, as the user of any tool, you must know how to use. It is possible that producers have rates much of the blame by failing to make this clear. It is also important to understand that a company is at a rate just means that the company was met, at the time of selection, the criteria used by the index.

Another part of the problem, which extends the above is the lack of transparency. These indexes are now going through the same stage that passed the rating agencies during the financial crisis. The methodology was not in the public and users used them without looking behind him. The problem was that the pundits did not trust us and the ignorant. The sustainability indices are also products for use by experts.

Remember that the information they deliver the Delivery companies are confidential, hence it can explain, though not justify, the lack of transparency regarding this information. Can we qualify as a responsible company that considers its sustainability information confidential? Many readers will say that this is a contradiction, which is a sign of irresponsibility. But here is also worth remembering that there may be information that would allow competition to decipher some secrets. If the information were to become public, companies begin to provide less information and therefore may be disadvantaged or even to stop. We are not defending the confidentiality, we are explaining. It would be desirable that the companies disclose all the information they gave to the indexes, make it available on their sustainability reports. But is that confidentiality is not as trivial as it seems.

is also alleged lack of transparency on the part of the indexes on the reasons for excluding or including companies. During 2010 there was a case that one of the indices exclude some firms that were included in another index. While it may seem absurd, remember that what is considered as a sustainable company in an index is different from what it considers another.

Moreover, disclose the reasons for the exclusion of a company may cause damage important, ranging far beyond the "irresponsibility" in which it is excluded. Some are excluded because they went one better (Dow Jones). Again, some would argue that disclosure is what to do. But we must also remember that rates are not institutions whose aim is to reward and punish irresponsible. They do not compete. If so, would be very few companies that wanted to participate in the process, and lose the opportunity for continuous improvement in sustainability. Presumably they know companies excluded because they are excluded and do something to improve and re-enter the index. As long as the cost-benefit to do so warrants.

There is a delicate balance between transparency and effectiveness, including precision and between utility rates. It is not trivial.

is also important to understand why companies want to become members. Presumably, the inclusion in the index should improve responsible business practices, improve market liquidity, improving access to financial markets and, perhaps, until his return on the stock. In a detailed study of the sustainability index a bag that I have just completed I realized that in fact, responsible practices of companies tend to improve to be included in the index and deteriorate to leave, but that their inclusion not have any affect on market liquidity, access to financial markets. In many studies it has been a confirmation on whether the inclusion makes his return on the stock is higher than that of companies not included. In some studies it seems that yes, in others not. They might be the most profitable to make efforts to be in the index. In any case, being in the indexes, not hurt.

Much of the criticism arising from that some people expect rates to be something they are not. Are not intended to be a source of information for the public, not information intermediaries between businesses and the public. Are special products for those who want to buy, are investment products to guide a group of investors. Many of those who criticize them because the indexes do not play the role they wanted to meet . We must remember that there is a public good, is a private good. This does not mean that just as we require companies to be responsible, so we should also require indexes. But we must also ask: Do you publish details of their business processes and components of its products and services?

But the day will discuss CSR in the sustainability indices.

But as in the case of companies, we can not achieve all of the overnight. Purists might be trying to create indexes and fully transparent. Companies you participate? We could pretend that contain only firms fully responsible. Where are they? Lose a good opportunity to contribute to sustainability.

With all these problems, the indexes can help improve the sustainability of enterprises, both through the process of internal introspection that they should take to prepare the information, and by the feedback they receive. Moreover, the inclusion in these indexes can help improve market liquidity and access to financing, which can start a vicious virtuoso of sustainability.

not throw the baby with the bath water bath.

The iceberg

The responsibility of business is like an iceberg. Not because it is cold, but it is only a small part. Only "see" what they themselves report, which is usually only good.

This comes up as the recent case sounded like BP. Many people wonder cone is possible for a company like that were described as responsible and even was on the various indices of sustainability. And he had won many awards. And after the accident in the Gulf of Mexico is discovered that it was not so
Most practices were submerged, as in the iceberg (or as a platform for BP).

was not so responsible before or is so irresponsible now. As stated by many football teams after a tough loss, not before we were so good, and now we're so bad.

If the accident had not occurred, would still rates BP in sustainability? Probably. What this demonstrates that the rates, the analysts and the general public know little about the real activities of firms, only what they choose to reveal or special investigations failed to reveal. Still rely mostly on companies in terms of information.

We have written several articles, that the total liability does not exist, the CSR is partial. BP event confirms this.

All companies have some responsible and irresponsible practices. Some more, some less. The question is where is located the net balance. Not many practices make the company responsible is qualified as responsible or irresponsible practice makes a company is irresponsible. And if some practice is irresponsible, what do we do? Do we draw from all lists of all the indexes? There would be no. Which is free of sin cast the first stone.

BP do not mean to excuse, on the contrary, as case has been confirmed that your balance is negative, not only because of the impact of this accident, but by the sequence of accidents in other countries attributable to negligence, among other irresponsible.

But if we discard all have committed some sin we do not have anyone. We must find redemption, working with those eager to improve, increasing the number and intensity of responsible practices in those vocations. But not to evict them is a problem. On the contrary, are those that need more help.

But neither say that they are responsible, as some insist awards. What's right is said to have responsible practices and companies to disclose what they are. So we work with companies to improve and not mislead or deceive naive ideas.

And as we said in the previous article, the prizes, awards and certificates are for specific practices, not general.

If we adopt these criteria do not demonize companies for some irresponsible practice responsible and appreciate the best would be more honest in the information they give us, not like now that we only show the tip of the iceberg and still is, in many cases, is pretty makeup.

With corporate responsibility can not generalize. As the writer and humorist Mark Twain: "All generalizations are false, ... ... ... .. including this one. "

Shooting Pain In The Left Side Of Neck

CSR CSR Awards and certifications: gold is not gold that glitters

With the angel on one shoulder and devil on the other, the willingness of companies to implement responsible practices is being tossed. On the one hand, the easy life you are told not to worry, that we should not make great efforts. You can win awards and certifications that is a responsible company with ease. On the other hand, the hard life they say they do not take that easy route, which will eventually be discovered and will suffer temporary those moments of joy.

With the awards and certifications generic hunger have been found with appetite. Institutions allegedly promoting corporate responsibility and give awards created with ease. Both the grantor and the winners, they earn "prestige", say rather than relatively cheap advertising. Some may organize annual conferences for the awards, some even get to charge for courses and participate in or offer advice on how to complete the questionnaires, while others give license to use logos that recognize the company as responsible. Many are awarded by institutions in which firms must be members, for a fee. The winners boast of winning a prize and announce it on their websites and in their sustainability reports. It's a win-win. " Everybody's happy.

This would not nothing wrong, if indeed the grantors have found that firms are (fully) responsible as they say. Unfortunately, to economize, the awards are based on questionnaires completed by companies, or rather, by specialized consultants. Who really wins is the company, who completed the questionnaire. Having seen many answers to questionnaires I have seen that almost the only thing that differentiates companies is how they say. The vast majority say everything that is expected to say. Said to have codes of ethics and conduct, but does not say if applicable, how many cases have occurred and how they have solved; says it has procedures for environmental protection, but whether it does or how it does. No talk of fines or problems:! The questionnaires do not ask!

Not to mention the awards where the public vote, as in the case of some reports of sustainability, where a public vote has not read the reports and where the vast majority vote for the companies in their country, without considering the from other countries.

But some companies have withdrawn a prize for showing irresponsibility? Who dares?

Similar problems have certifications or accreditations issued by governments such as generic The bill proposes Sustainable Economy in Spain (see the article "Accreditation companies responsible? on the blog www.cumpetere.blogspot.com) and the Bill of Corporate Social Responsibility of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. Without going into details of whether governments have the capacity to certify companies, one wonders what happens if the other communities decide to imitate these "initiatives." Will more companies certified by a community than another? Will be certified in all regions? Not to worry, if adopted these laws, an institution that will soon make a ranking of certifications autonomous communities or governments.

There were many (some say they were few) and gave birth grandma

And now we're joining the party ISO 26000, or rather, their children. ISO 26000, which is not certifiable, does not mean that national regulatory authorities (generally institutions regulatory standards ISO certificate) issued certifiable standards. In the scope says "This International Standard is not intended to prevent the development of national standards which are more specific, more stringent or different types of" ISO normalization should not get into qualitative and subjective, but he did and got a good guide to guide (forgive the cacophony) the design and implementation of responsible practices. The ISO 26000 is the product of a lengthy consultative process, reasonably inclusive, with the participation of international experts. But he could not close the door on national certifications. Hopefully, with your business, national institutions and draw beyond certifiable standards. The temptation will be great and I can imagine a race to see who gets the first certifiable national standard based on ISO 26000. And we need to see how much loyalty remain with the original.

rules already exist generate certificates issued by some of these institutions (in Mexico, Colombia), but not based on ISO 26000 and not widely used. But to use that name in the standard ISO 26000 certifiable tempt companies to ask them and consultants to provide them. Lead us not into temptation ... ... ..

is that the total liability does not exist. There are responsible and some have many. Which is free of sin cast the first stone. What

responsible practices needed are specific practices certifications made by accredited institutions, independent, non-certified consultants (who certifies the certifiers?). Institutions that are exclusively dedicated to these tasks, to check field practices, to audit the process and provide certificates with an expiration date, which must be renewed.

There are good examples of these specific certifications, but also can have their problems: Fair Trade (check prices paid to producers), Social Accountability (check working conditions), WRAP (laborare conditions in textiles), ICTI (in the making Toy), Child Labour (certifications by industry: clothing, carpets, cocoa, etc.), Forest Stewardship Council (sustainable use of forests), the label SPCA in Brazil on the absence of child labor, promoted by the Foundation Abrinq among many other certifications. The use of these labels does have value ... ... but not always appreciated by the consumer.

sustainability indexes also some stock exchanges make some verification of the information from companies, but not very detailed, more dependent on "punishment" which is to be excluded from the index (in a future article will cover this topic.)

From what I have to be proud of and report on the website and in the sustainability report is how many certifications they have, by whom granted, since when they have them. That did not reap as many rewards, not how many accolades he received from the institutions to which he made a donation or become a member. Hopefully

hear the angel and not the devil.

A call to corporate responsibility: Increase

traditional schemes for reducing poverty is based on giving them fish, and sometimes teach them to fish. But this is not enough. Companies, through its responsibility to society, can and should do something more: Increased fishing.

The MDGs, the Global Compact and its omissions

Much has been said recently of the Millennium Development Goals, on the occasion of the recent Summit in New York, which analyzed the achievements, shortcomings and to not look bad, there were many commitments (a day should create a supranational institution that has the power to ensure compliance, at least that these commitments will be more serious and sincere). We will not go into the details of the outcome of the Summit and the reader can read the extensive media coverage it has generated.

The MDGs are goals that must be satisfied mainly the public sector. Goals include aggregate, to be achieved before 2015, to eradicate poverty, infant mortality, discrimination, maternal health, environmental protection, reduction of certain diseases. It has a purpose, apparently added at the last minute, as they say "other issues, "calling for" a global partnership for development "that has a goal, 8A can be interpreted as an indirect call to social inclusion (Develop further an open trading and financial system, rule-based, predictable and nondiscriminatory ....) Except for this latter task, mainly correspond to other governments, although some large companies perform actions aimed at achieving other goals. Maybe they achieve certain goals (global) poverty reduction, although not at the country level, thanks to strong progress in China and India, who have (or had) a large proportion of the world's poor and who have made great progress.

The Global Compact seeks supposedly fill the gap left open by the MDGs, aimed specifically at companies. It commits signatory companies to certain standards of conduct in the areas of human rights, forced and child labor, environment and corruption but do not worry about the role of business in reducing poverty. It is to "do no evil", without bothering to propose "do good." Are statements of good intentions, monitoring compliance and without consequences for failure (as long as reporting what is done or not done, once every three years one can remain a member of that community.) There is very little overlap between the MDGs and Global Compact, but a huge gap.

In some Latin American countries have implemented programs CCT (Bolsa Familia in Brazil, Oportunidades in Mexico, for example), which provide subsidies to poor families in exchange for children attending school and access to preventive medicine, are a palliative, reducing the numbers of people who are below certain income levels, but do not reduce poverty in the broader definition we have given above. These are programs of poverty alleviation, not poverty reduction. What happens when children grow up and finish school? Do you find work? Do you have an opportunity to participate in economic activity?

development assistance plays a key role, but out of poverty with employment, with the use of the productive capacity of the individual, not handouts. Obviously with health and education as prerequisites.

But the MDGs and Global Compact are very short, ignore the individual and entrepreneurship, are based on the assumption that we must "give fish" instead of "teaching to fish" and what is Most importantly, "there fishing." What happens when many have learned to fish if there are no fish?

The company and its potential for poverty reduction

The company's potential to contribute to poverty reduction, empowerment of the individual, that he was fishing, is virtually ignored in the MDGs and the Global Compact. Have

out China and India to millions of people out of poverty through development assistance or through donations? NO. The poor have escaped poverty thanks to the use of production capacity, thanks to the projects, thanks to private initiative. How ironic that the communist country have used instruments supposedly capitalist and socialist not to reduce poverty.

While poverty reduction is not, in principle, corporate responsibility, can make important contributions to it, which in the long term benefit, through the virtuous circle of development. Hence, in some cases, this may be part of their social responsibility.

To this we must correct the prevalent error that poverty is measured only as purchasing power. It is a much broader concept. As I said the pastoral letter of 1986 from the U.S. bishops in paragraph 188: "The principle of participation leads to the conviction that the most appropriate and fundamental solutions to poverty are those that allow people to take control of their own lives. Because poverty is not simply a lack of financial resources. Involves a more fundamental kind of deprivation, denial to participate fully in economic, social and political life of society ... .. . " This is the definition of poverty that thirteen years later popularized Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in his book Development as Freedom, 1999. According to these criteria, has just launched a broader measure of poverty, based on access to basic services, including health and education. Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative ( http://www.ophi.org.uk/ ).

How do we do? Already said John Paul II in his encyclical Centesimus Annus, 1991: (58) ... .... Indeed, it is not superfluous to give, but of helping entire peoples which are excluded or marginalized to enter into the circle of economic development and human . This will be possible not only using the superfluous that our world produces in abundance, but above all a change .... The production models and consumption ... ...

Count is here the company can play an important role. This is a call for inclusive business, which eleven years later popularized by Prahalad in his book " Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid ", although originally called for the holding of an underserved market through products and services This concept was later extended to economic inclusion.

MDGs and Global Compact to solving the problem of poverty are not in balance, not stand, even with conditional cash transfers. need the third leg Participation in economic activity, which may be provided by the inclusive business (which in some ways are implied in Goal 8 of the MDGs calls for public-private partnerships to promote economic and social development, but are mostly aimed at business-government collaboration and not have achieved much.)

is through work, employment, empowerment constituted by participation in economic activity, the inclusion in the circle of exchange, that a man achieves his dignity, as does the reduction of poverty in the sense wide. This does mean that companies are key players, which makes lack leadership, with the support of governments and civil society. Inclusive business, or in the broadest sense, the activities that contribute to reducing inequality, where companies do not see the poor as a market, but as providers of goods and services, as partners, are one of many instruments which can be incorporated into low-income groups in economic activity.

responsible practices in business community support, employment, fair wages, ownership, acquisitions and general business inclusive, constitute the third leg of the program to reduce poverty. is where they are taught to fish and increase fishing.

Are we confused?: CSR and social enterprises

I just read a couple of short articles that illustrate many of the problems facing those who want to promote responsible business practices. One, a proponent of business at the Base of the Pyramid, is working on trying to convince us that this is not CSR, which is a separate discipline. The other goes into a discussion about whether social enterprises can or should aspire to gain. Both cases illustrate because many companies have reason to be skeptical about CSR. If proponents argue among themselves, the companies can be confused.

In the first case, called Base of the Pyramid (BoP) Corporate Social Responsibility? He challenges that inclusive business in the BoP are part of CSR. Argues that " the base of the pyramid must be built on" private business "that exists when a company and its community partners are considered essential to each other for their identity and collective health and wellness and involves a deep interdependence in the company and the community develop and nurture a shared commitment to growth and long-term development of each of them. " also states that" the idea that relate the conceptualization of the base of the pyramid (Or even inclusive business) to CSR will result in a limitation on the development of people in poverty ", casting doubt that inclusive business are part of CSR. Let

both assertions. In the first statement the author argues for the privacy of inclusive business and a deep interdependence between them. If that were the case, would no longer take advantage of multiple opportunities to incorporate neglected sectors in the circle of trade, economic activity. The company can hardly afford intimacy with all related and established businesses or business unit, by definition, weaker that depend on it, not vice versa. Why restrict both the scope of operation? Why require much additional effort for the company?

The second assertion, the author argues that inclusive business relating to CSR, limits the development of people in poverty. Do not be so exclusive that their definition of inclusive business is the limited inclusion? It seems that CSR is guilty of failure to resolve poverty. It is true that the company is the responsibility of solving the problems of poverty, but it is also true that the company would want to operate in a market where everyone can participate, you should do everything in their power, within the framework of its business, to improve the lives of those less privileged segments and that can contribute to the development of the same company. If the goal of inclusive business was to solve poverty, can hardly be called hard business and be financially sustainable in the long term. If the business inclusive of the company have these poverty reduction targets, then the author is right, is not part of their practices responsible for the company, is part of his philanthropy, most likely short-lived. It would be a huge missed opportunity if we limit ourselves to inclusive businesses that meet these characteristics. This

t seems be aimed at creating a new discipline of "inclusive business", or BoP, CSR separate. With the balkanization of the subject, so that some win, we all lose. It is preferable to support each other, build a better society without divisions semantics. Inclusive business and BoP businesses are one of many responsible practices within a framework of CSR. (I invite the author of that article to post your response on my blog)

The second article is a review of the latest book by Muhammad Yunus, Building Social Business: The new kind of capitalitsm That SERVES Humanity's Most Pressing Needs "by Rodney Schwartz, published in the Stanford Social Innovation Review Fall 2010. The article's author criticizes lu Yunus for his narrow definition of what constitutes a social enterprise. Yunus is defined as a nonprofit company that aims to produce products and services for social purposes. His argument is that the opposition of Yunus-profit greatly limit the types of companies that qualify as social and therefore its ability to capture markets and donor support.

In a dispassionate analysis, the discussion seems irrelevant semantics. How to rate the company seems to be irrelevant, what matters is the contribution it makes to economic development. But it is more likely to survive if it makes profits to support its continuation. This is not your goal is only the achievement of benefits, much less market exploitation of the poor and uninformed. This can be progressively moving away from the social objective. But to pretend that only has social objectives, can be made dependent on donations from third parties, and limit their innovation and empowerment. If the undertaking has benefits always have the option of using them to donate or subsidize some products or services to segments with less ability to pay. If you do not get them, their livelihood is constantly at risk.

Yunus himself, referring the founder of the largest microfinance institution in India that made an issue of shares in the capital market, called it "a young competent has made the wrong decision to use microfinance to make money." The discussion should not be if you win money, it should be if he won responsibly provide its services with efficient intermediation margins, looking for sources of cheaper funds, educating customers about the proper use of credit, providing the products they need, contributing to its development, etc.

One company, by definition, must have as its first objective financial sustainability, otherwise you can not do much (and we're not talking philanthropy fund.) What should be avoided is that the lens is the only and ignore or crush other objectives of contributing to economic and social development.

What to do with the "bad" law of forests in Cordoba? Epec

MF retake the Earth Update Digital Freedom after a time of reorganization and preparations for this anniversary to celebrate with some publications in our social networks and possibly even special guests beginning of our 20 years of existence ( and there will be a special post).
We've been talking about in our social networks (Facebook group or page on Facebook and Twitter both the institutional environment, as in the author of this note and editor of Digital Free Land ) on the negative effects of forest law Cordoba and powerful interests were played and were completed demonstrating the unique situation in that ruling, and some important part of the "opposition" voted together against the draft by all NGOs and previously agreed. This is like a double tragedy for the leadership of Cordova, who preferred not forward-looking "negotiate" with the most powerful: just seems that legislators (UCR, UPC, FCyS - Neighborhood) are more permeable to lobby ruralistas and defend the very great economic interests behind that thinking about the common good in the future of Cordoba and future generations.
After more than two years in which experts and civil society participated to develop a standard that meets national law known as "Bonasso" and the Nation Otor
go two extensions to be put to the Province day, both the ruling and some of the supposed "opposition" speculated electorally with the vote of a certain sector of the field but did not think about the future and benefit the whole society and also leaving some doubt as to what or how much consisted of rural pressures.
Therefore, from the Environmental Forum of Cordova quickly sounded the alarm and spoke quickly: " * We strongly reject the contents of the 9814 Act, because it is unconstitutional for failing meet the minimum protection of forests established by the National Law 26,331. * warn that the 9814 Act is even a decline in the protection of forests with respect to the previous provincial standard in effect since 2005, the 9219 Act. * We support the courses of action initiated by the Zoning Commission Native Forests of the Province of Córdoba (COTBN) intended to declare this law unconstitutional recently enacted, said biologist Federico kopt, coordinates dor of the forum who
then we

reiterated and explained the reason for the rejection of the scope of this new law:
"reject content strongly Act 9814, and that is unconstitutional for failing to comply with the minimum protection of forests established by the National Law 26,331, because, among other things, enable " sustainable use "in Category I or red (high maintenance) and generates the exception of areas can be removed in red and yellow if it is generated irrigated production infrastructure."
also added: "We warn even the 9814 Act is a step backwards in the protection of forests with respect to the standard previous provincial force since 2005, the 9219 Act , and which enables removal of native forests in certain places such as conservation category III or green, and where infrastructure exists or is generated for production under irrigation, while the standard prohibited directly above the total clearing throughout the province for a period of 10 years. If the nation accepts this standard, in addition to condemning the native forests of Córdoba, can multiply their bad example to be emulated in other jurisdictions. "
Finally, the last day of August, the committee of experts established by the Higher Council National University of Cordoba (UNC) handed to the rector, the report recommends that the house of higher learning sue the unconstitutionality of the forestry law passed by the provincial legislature. Among the reasons highlighted by the team of lawyers and environmental specialists, highlighting the possibility open for the standard to operate productively areas called "red", ie those that should have the highest conservation. "The law speaks of sustainable use of the red areas where installing an irrigation system. That completely contradicts what was stated in national legislation, "explained Marcelo Fitted Depth researcher and contributor to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (Nobel Peace Prize, 2007), who was also one of the four members of the committee of experts. For the specialist, not respecting the forests located on slopes greater than 5% and also contradicts the provincial law governing basics 10 nationwide.

Now we have to expect that the presentations made in court are resolved favorably and convicting the Province of Córdoba to make a new rule, can not hurt that the costs and expenses are deducted from the diets of those the vote. And that all civil society, institutions, NGO `s are also mobilized filing injunctions or judicial remedies are not available to apply to be declared unconstitutional and forced to issue a new standard.
For all this we believe that it remains relevant to note that it is very important to protect the few remaining forests in Cordoba, as has been the Province that more area of \u200b\u200bforest has been lost, and there is only l 5% nothing else!. Therefore, I invite you to share this note as each of the following in your networks to bring awareness to everyone in general, it is not a question of a group of environmental fanatics, but a serious matter that primarily affects the ordinary people more than any other.
For the serious
c ONSEQUENCES that deforestation will not only suffer the future generations, but also affects the present with droughts, floods and being a factor to climate change. That's why I recommend several media reports Tierra Libre Digital addressing deforestation in CBA, either for crops or mega real estate projects that devastate mountain forest . If you use Google Earth fijate Salsipuedes Area (just above the location that gives wrong but the satellite photos are very clear on deforestation graph), is striking the clearance and is one of the areas with most water like all the Sierras Chicas. That closes the loop between powerful businessman and provincial and municipal government, all agree in pursuit of "progress" as bulldozer treads everything in its path. It is really shocking to approve construction of apartment buildings Dinosaur Group in a small town like Salsipuedes. The great interest deforested and economic impact on the environment and landscape.
at this point is tired shown that you need a great plan for remediation of fires in the mountains both the water issue as it was crucial for the latest water crisis as for the recovery of mountain forests, but favoring the planting of native species. And how there is a direct relationship with the water crisis issue of forests and forestry in the basins of the rivers and mountain streams. Basis, although it has been slowly recovering Lake La Quebrada (still far from the landfill), and do not forget the images could be seen only in high season, so it is not happening all the time and do not live in permanent water crisis should reforest upland watersheds and other measures as experts point out (with all the photographic coverage and the respective analysis.) Ultimately
unfortunate what happened to the forest law of Cordoba. After all aside the main issue is that forests are protected in the interests of a few talks about the kind of leadership we have and the quality of our legislators who would have them pay the cost of this "tragedy."

While it is an issue that is constantly present in Tierra Libre Digital , and for World Environment Day had been trying to prepare a special compilation of our pr oduction related to the ecological theme and all of topical and the timeless content as the validity of each of the topics and specific issues that we have been addressing since the clearing or deforestation globally or in our mountains as to develop a mega real estate venture, as global warming and climate change brings daily impact of their daily influence on human activity, as in the picture you see a pile of stones accumulated, that is nothing more and nothing less than a reservation-park as Salsipuedes plats, the management Sergio Cornejo has become a mine for the extraction of aggregates in Villa Sol, Salsipuedes, next to the Estancia La Overa (see photo opposite).

This commemorative is held every year since the UN General Assembly in 1972 approved the creation of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) conference in Stockholm, Sweden, whose theme was precisely the Environment. Issue that has become increasingly important to be today a major concern worldwide for their direct or indirect impact on human lives, the economy of the country and even the future of humanity. At present it is impossible to abstract from this issue that crosses all areas: socio-politico-economic and ideological, coming in many countries to gain strength through political movements and parties with parliamentary representation, little by little have sought to regulate the negative impact of many industries (chemical, petrochemical, agricultural, transportation and even recreation).

So we are not interested in this subject from one day to the other, but that is a fundamental part of the content we offer, we propose a new tour of some of the multimedia special reports addressing a problem from different sides that is of increasing importance. Again we invite you to share it with your friends and contacts by bit to help the necessary awareness of all and if you're part of an institution or NGOs to make submissions to the Court to annul this law.

It is estimated that climate change would be worse than expected because it predicts that the acceleration of deterioration would be such that would double the rate of warming with major hikes in temperature as 4.6 degrees Celsius, according to the most optimistic. The pessimists assume a higher increase, up to 6.4 degrees for the period.
