The iceberg
The responsibility of business is like an iceberg. Not because it is cold, but it is only a small part. Only "see" what they themselves report, which is usually only good.
This comes up as the recent case sounded like BP. Many people wonder cone is possible for a company like that were described as responsible and even was on the various indices of sustainability. And he had won many awards. And after the accident in the Gulf of Mexico is discovered that it was not so
Most practices were submerged, as in the iceberg (or as a platform for BP).
was not so responsible before or is so irresponsible now. As stated by many football teams after a tough loss, not before we were so good, and now we're so bad.
If the accident had not occurred, would still rates BP in sustainability? Probably. What this demonstrates that the rates, the analysts and the general public know little about the real activities of firms, only what they choose to reveal or special investigations failed to reveal. Still rely mostly on companies in terms of information.
We have written several articles, that the total liability does not exist, the CSR is partial. BP event confirms this.
All companies have some responsible and irresponsible practices. Some more, some less. The question is where is located the net balance. Not many practices make the company responsible is qualified as responsible or irresponsible practice makes a company is irresponsible. And if some practice is irresponsible, what do we do? Do we draw from all lists of all the indexes? There would be no. Which is free of sin cast the first stone.
BP do not mean to excuse, on the contrary, as case has been confirmed that your balance is negative, not only because of the impact of this accident, but by the sequence of accidents in other countries attributable to negligence, among other irresponsible.
But if we discard all have committed some sin we do not have anyone. We must find redemption, working with those eager to improve, increasing the number and intensity of responsible practices in those vocations. But not to evict them is a problem. On the contrary, are those that need more help.
But neither say that they are responsible, as some insist awards. What's right is said to have responsible practices and companies to disclose what they are. So we work with companies to improve and not mislead or deceive naive ideas.
And as we said in the previous article, the prizes, awards and certificates are for specific practices, not general.
If we adopt these criteria do not demonize companies for some irresponsible practice responsible and appreciate the best would be more honest in the information they give us, not like now that we only show the tip of the iceberg and still is, in many cases, is pretty makeup.
With corporate responsibility can not generalize. As the writer and humorist Mark Twain: "All generalizations are false, ... ... ... .. including this one. "

Shooting Pain In The Left Side Of Neck
CSR CSR Awards and certifications: gold is not gold that glitters
With the angel on one shoulder and devil on the other, the willingness of companies to implement responsible practices is being tossed. On the one hand, the easy life you are told not to worry, that we should not make great efforts. You can win awards and certifications that is a responsible company with ease. On the other hand, the hard life they say they do not take that easy route, which will eventually be discovered and will suffer temporary those moments of joy.
With the awards and certifications generic hunger have been found with appetite. Institutions allegedly promoting corporate responsibility and give awards created with ease. Both the grantor and the winners, they earn "prestige", say rather than relatively cheap advertising. Some may organize annual conferences for the awards, some even get to charge for courses and participate in or offer advice on how to complete the questionnaires, while others give license to use logos that recognize the company as responsible. Many are awarded by institutions in which firms must be members, for a fee. The winners boast of winning a prize and announce it on their websites and in their sustainability reports. It's a win-win. " Everybody's happy.
This would not nothing wrong, if indeed the grantors have found that firms are (fully) responsible as they say. Unfortunately, to economize, the awards are based on questionnaires completed by companies, or rather, by specialized consultants. Who really wins is the company, who completed the questionnaire. Having seen many answers to questionnaires I have seen that almost the only thing that differentiates companies is how they say. The vast majority say everything that is expected to say. Said to have codes of ethics and conduct, but does not say if applicable, how many cases have occurred and how they have solved; says it has procedures for environmental protection, but whether it does or how it does. No talk of fines or problems:! The questionnaires do not ask!
Not to mention the awards where the public vote, as in the case of some reports of sustainability, where a public vote has not read the reports and where the vast majority vote for the companies in their country, without considering the from other countries.
But some companies have withdrawn a prize for showing irresponsibility? Who dares?
Similar problems have certifications or accreditations issued by governments such as generic The bill proposes Sustainable Economy in Spain (see the article "Accreditation companies responsible? on the blog www.cumpetere.blogspot.com) and the Bill of Corporate Social Responsibility of the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. Without going into details of whether governments have the capacity to certify companies, one wonders what happens if the other communities decide to imitate these "initiatives." Will more companies certified by a community than another? Will be certified in all regions? Not to worry, if adopted these laws, an institution that will soon make a ranking of certifications autonomous communities or governments.
There were many (some say they were few) and gave birth grandma
And now we're joining the party ISO 26000, or rather, their children. ISO 26000, which is not certifiable, does not mean that national regulatory authorities (generally institutions regulatory standards ISO certificate) issued certifiable standards. In the scope says "This International Standard is not intended to prevent the development of national standards which are more specific, more stringent or different types of" ISO normalization should not get into qualitative and subjective, but he did and got a good guide to guide (forgive the cacophony) the design and implementation of responsible practices. The ISO 26000 is the product of a lengthy consultative process, reasonably inclusive, with the participation of international experts. But he could not close the door on national certifications. Hopefully, with your business, national institutions and draw beyond certifiable standards. The temptation will be great and I can imagine a race to see who gets the first certifiable national standard based on ISO 26000. And we need to see how much loyalty remain with the original.
rules already exist generate certificates issued by some of these institutions (in Mexico, Colombia), but not based on ISO 26000 and not widely used. But to use that name in the standard ISO 26000 certifiable tempt companies to ask them and consultants to provide them. Lead us not into temptation ... ... ..
is that the total liability does not exist. There are responsible and some have many. Which is free of sin cast the first stone. What
responsible practices needed are specific practices certifications made by accredited institutions, independent, non-certified consultants (who certifies the certifiers?). Institutions that are exclusively dedicated to these tasks, to check field practices, to audit the process and provide certificates with an expiration date, which must be renewed.
There are good examples of these specific certifications, but also can have their problems: Fair Trade (check prices paid to producers), Social Accountability (check working conditions), WRAP (laborare conditions in textiles), ICTI (in the making Toy), Child Labour (certifications by industry: clothing, carpets, cocoa, etc.), Forest Stewardship Council (sustainable use of forests), the label SPCA in Brazil on the absence of child labor, promoted by the Foundation Abrinq among many other certifications. The use of these labels does have value ... ... but not always appreciated by the consumer.
sustainability indexes also some stock exchanges make some verification of the information from companies, but not very detailed, more dependent on "punishment" which is to be excluded from the index (in a future article will cover this topic.)
From what I have to be proud of and report on the website and in the sustainability report is how many certifications they have, by whom granted, since when they have them. That did not reap as many rewards, not how many accolades he received from the institutions to which he made a donation or become a member. Hopefully
hear the angel and not the devil.

5 Weeks Pregnant And Dry Cervical Mucus
A call to corporate responsibility: Increase
traditional schemes for reducing poverty is based on giving them fish, and sometimes teach them to fish. But this is not enough. Companies, through its responsibility to society, can and should do something more: Increased fishing.
The MDGs, the Global Compact and its omissions
Much has been said recently of the Millennium Development Goals, on the occasion of the recent Summit in New York, which analyzed the achievements, shortcomings and to not look bad, there were many commitments (a day should create a supranational institution that has the power to ensure compliance, at least that these commitments will be more serious and sincere). We will not go into the details of the outcome of the Summit and the reader can read the extensive media coverage it has generated.
The MDGs are goals that must be satisfied mainly the public sector. Goals include aggregate, to be achieved before 2015, to eradicate poverty, infant mortality, discrimination, maternal health, environmental protection, reduction of certain diseases. It has a purpose, apparently added at the last minute, as they say "other issues, "calling for" a global partnership for development "that has a goal, 8A can be interpreted as an indirect call to social inclusion (Develop further an open trading and financial system, rule-based, predictable and nondiscriminatory ....) Except for this latter task, mainly correspond to other governments, although some large companies perform actions aimed at achieving other goals. Maybe they achieve certain goals (global) poverty reduction, although not at the country level, thanks to strong progress in China and India, who have (or had) a large proportion of the world's poor and who have made great progress.
The Global Compact seeks supposedly fill the gap left open by the MDGs, aimed specifically at companies. It commits signatory companies to certain standards of conduct in the areas of human rights, forced and child labor, environment and corruption but do not worry about the role of business in reducing poverty. It is to "do no evil", without bothering to propose "do good." Are statements of good intentions, monitoring compliance and without consequences for failure (as long as reporting what is done or not done, once every three years one can remain a member of that community.) There is very little overlap between the MDGs and Global Compact, but a huge gap.
In some Latin American countries have implemented programs CCT (Bolsa Familia in Brazil, Oportunidades in Mexico, for example), which provide subsidies to poor families in exchange for children attending school and access to preventive medicine, are a palliative, reducing the numbers of people who are below certain income levels, but do not reduce poverty in the broader definition we have given above. These are programs of poverty alleviation, not poverty reduction. What happens when children grow up and finish school? Do you find work? Do you have an opportunity to participate in economic activity?
development assistance plays a key role, but out of poverty with employment, with the use of the productive capacity of the individual, not handouts. Obviously with health and education as prerequisites.
But the MDGs and Global Compact are very short, ignore the individual and entrepreneurship, are based on the assumption that we must "give fish" instead of "teaching to fish" and what is Most importantly, "there fishing." What happens when many have learned to fish if there are no fish?
The company and its potential for poverty reduction
The company's potential to contribute to poverty reduction, empowerment of the individual, that he was fishing, is virtually ignored in the MDGs and the Global Compact. Have
out China and India to millions of people out of poverty through development assistance or through donations? NO. The poor have escaped poverty thanks to the use of production capacity, thanks to the projects, thanks to private initiative. How ironic that the communist country have used instruments supposedly capitalist and socialist not to reduce poverty.
While poverty reduction is not, in principle, corporate responsibility, can make important contributions to it, which in the long term benefit, through the virtuous circle of development. Hence, in some cases, this may be part of their social responsibility.
To this we must correct the prevalent error that poverty is measured only as purchasing power. It is a much broader concept. As I said the pastoral letter of 1986 from the U.S. bishops in paragraph 188: "The principle of participation leads to the conviction that the most appropriate and fundamental solutions to poverty are those that allow people to take control of their own lives. Because poverty is not simply a lack of financial resources. Involves a more fundamental kind of deprivation, denial to participate fully in economic, social and political life of society ... .. . " This is the definition of poverty that thirteen years later popularized Nobel laureate Amartya Sen in his book Development as Freedom, 1999. According to these criteria, has just launched a broader measure of poverty, based on access to basic services, including health and education. Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative ( http://www.ophi.org.uk/ ).
How do we do? Already said John Paul II in his encyclical Centesimus Annus, 1991: (58) ... .... Indeed, it is not superfluous to give, but of helping entire peoples which are excluded or marginalized to enter into the circle of economic development and human . This will be possible not only using the superfluous that our world produces in abundance, but above all a change .... The production models and consumption ... ...
Count is here the company can play an important role. This is a call for inclusive business, which eleven years later popularized by Prahalad in his book " Fortune at the Bottom of the Pyramid ", although originally called for the holding of an underserved market through products and services This concept was later extended to economic inclusion.
MDGs and Global Compact to solving the problem of poverty are not in balance, not stand, even with conditional cash transfers. need the third leg Participation in economic activity, which may be provided by the inclusive business (which in some ways are implied in Goal 8 of the MDGs calls for public-private partnerships to promote economic and social development, but are mostly aimed at business-government collaboration and not have achieved much.)
is through work, employment, empowerment constituted by participation in economic activity, the inclusion in the circle of exchange, that a man achieves his dignity, as does the reduction of poverty in the sense wide. This does mean that companies are key players, which makes lack leadership, with the support of governments and civil society. Inclusive business, or in the broadest sense, the activities that contribute to reducing inequality, where companies do not see the poor as a market, but as providers of goods and services, as partners, are one of many instruments which can be incorporated into low-income groups in economic activity.
